We asked concept artist and CG Spectrum art instructor, Brandon Reimchen, to share the essential skills every art student needs to master. Brandon broke these important skills down into two major components, hard skills, and soft skills.
Hard skills are measurable technical skills, which are the ones students primarily focus on. Brandon listed: drawing from life, drawing from reference, challenging yourself, not overcomplicating your work. learning from other artists.
Soft skills are often overlooked. These are skills that are related to emotional intelligence, that help us to interact with the people around us. Soft skills include being prompt and clear in your communication, reading instructions, asking questions, listening to feedback, and providing respectful and specific feedback.
A good balance of both hard and soft skills will make a successful, well-rounded artist who works well as part of a team. None of these skills is necessary innate, so it pays to practice and learn them before you launch into your career.
About Brandon Reimchen and CG Spectrum
Brandon is currently head of the Department of Concept Art and Illustration at CG Spectrum. After receiving his degree in Fine Arts in 2003, Brandon began working in the video game industry as a Concept Artist. Since then he has produced work for companies like EA, Activision, Capcom, Gree, and Disney Interactive.
His focus as a Concept Artist has been placed on being adaptable to different aesthetic styles, while always adding visual interest to his designs. Whether it’s characters, props, or environment art, Brandon aims to elevate each project he works on by employing imagination and attention to detail to produce a quality product.
By relying on his experience, he aims to provide students with an inside look at how to achieve industry-level standards in their own concept art portfolio.
